Springs of Living Water

"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,
out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
(John 7:38)

The heart of a believer is not a dry desert place. Even in the valleys and storms of life, the Lord Jesus implants within our hearts a river of living waters that overflows towards others.

The same river that transformed us from death to life now runs through our hearts, providing a continuous flow of refreshment, hope and healing to a decadent and dying world. As we draw close to our Lord, we acknowledge the truth that the purpose of our life is fulfilled not after the measure of our external achievements, but to the extent that our hearts are filled, replenished and renewed by the Lord Jesus, the Living Water, and to the extent we allow this healing river to flow towards others. The apostle Paul said "For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:6-7)

There is indeed no room for half-measures and complacency when we live in the presence of the Lord of life. Just as a mighty river continues to flow incessantly, unhindered by any obstacles, unexhausted and unstoppable in its course, the love of the Lord that flows in our hearts cannot be bound within. Such love does not rest in idealism and wishful thinking, but manifests itself in active practical and immediate ways. It does not fear to stoop down and reach the dark and miserable places, it does not turn away from by the deformities and ugliness of the world and it does not flee from hardships and self sacrifice.

The fountain of life that we have in our Lord Jesus does not rest, but lives and moves to flow and bless the lives of others around us. Let us focus our affections and our thoughts on our Lord Jesus so that we are continually inspired and motivated by His love. Then let us allow God to make us channels of His love in everything we do and messengers of hope by faith in the Lord Jesus wherever we go.
